Should parents have to earn respect from their children, just as children should have to earn respect from their parents?

I feel that mutual respect is important between parent and child.

If a parent is disrespectful to their child (throwing insults, beating, or being abusive in any way at all), they don't deserve the respect, yet they still expect it, even though they haven't respected their child.
